Mechanism of Action
Paracetamol is a safe and clinically effective analgesic-antipyretic. It relieves headache, muscle and joint pains, generalized malaise and fever often accompanying the common cold, influenza and other respiratory tract infections.
Paracetamol raises the pain threshold to check headache, muscle and joint pains, and general malaise frequently associated with common cold.
Phenylephrine HCl clears obstructed respiratory passages and nasal sinuses due to congestion thereby facilitating drainage and easier breathing.
Phenylpropanolamine HCl provides efficient decongestion of obstructed and inflamed nasal and paranasal mucosa. Compared with ephedrine and phenylephrine which gives a 2-hr long activity, phenylpropanolamine gives a 7-hr duration of decongestive activity. In point of clinical safety, it is less likely to cause central stimulation resulting in anxiety or insomnia. Neither does it cause rebound congestion.
Chlorpheniramine maleate is a well-accepted anti-allergic agent (antihistamine). It relieves allergic manifestations eg, itching, sneezing and runny nose.
Chlorpheniramine maleate is useful for controlling allergic manifestations of upper respiratory afflictions eg, runny nose, postnasal drip, sneezing and lacrimation. Aside from being an effective histamine antagonist, chlorpheniramine maleate acts synergistically with phenylpropanolamine to provide greater decongestive effect and longer relief. And with the improvement of nasal and paranasal drainage, ventilation is not only improved, but secondary infections and complications which may follow blockage are also prevented.
