Calcipotriene 0.005%

Indications

Calcipotriene 0.005% is used for: Plaque psoriasis, Scalp psoriasis

Adult Dose

Apply a thin layer of ointment once or twice daily.

Child Dose

Renal Dose

Administration

Rub in gently and completely. May use for up to 8 weeks

Contra Indications

Patients with a history of hypersensitivity to any of the components of the preparation. It should not be used by patients with demonstrated hypercalcemia or evidence of vitamin D toxicity.

Precautions

For external use only. Keep out of the reach of children. Always wash hands thoroughly after use. Transient, rapidly reversible elevation of serum calcium has occurred with use . If elevation in serum calcium outside the normal range should occur, discontinue treatment until normal calcium levels are restored. Lactation: excretion in milk unknown; use with caution

Side effects of Calcipotriene 0.005% : >10% Burning,Itching,Skin irritation 1-10% Dermatitis,Dry skin,Erythema,Peeling,Worsening of psoriasis including facial/scalp,Rash <1% Folliculitis,Hypercalcemia,Hyperpigmentation,Skin atrophy

Mechanism of Action

In vitro evidence suggests drug is roughly equipotent to natural vitamin D in its effects on proliferation & differentiation of various cell types.
