Indications

Pheniramine + Guaifenesin is used for: Allergic conditions, Cough

Adult Dose

Oral Allergic conditions, Cough Adult: As Syrup: 1-2 (200-400mg) tsf 2-3 times daily.

Child Dose

Oral Allergic conditions, Cough Child > 6 years: As Syrup: 1/2-1 tsf (100-200mg) 2-3 times daily

Renal Dose

Administration

Should be taken with food. Take after meals.

Contra Indications

Hypersensitivity, neonates and premature infants.

Precautions

May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Has potential for abuse. Narrow angle glaucoma, asthma or severe CV disease. Persistent cough e.g. occurs with smoking, asthma, chronic bronchitis, or emphysema. Pregnancy and lactation. Elderly.

Adverse Effects

Side effects of Pheniramine + Guaifenesin : Sedation. Hypersensitivity reactions. Lassitude, dizziness, tinnitus, inability to concentrate, incoordination, irritability, insomnia and tremors. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, colic, epigastric pain, anorexia, dryness of mouth and constipation. Urinary retention. Palpitations, headache. Blurred vision, increased intraocular pressure. Muscular weakness. Rarely, blood dyscrasias e.g. agranulocytosis, haemolytic anaemia. GI discomfort, nausea and vomiting; dizziness, drowsiness, headache; rash; decreased uric acid levels;

Mechanism of Action

Pheniramine is an alkylamine derivative with histamine H1-receptor antagonist effects. It also has anticholinergic and moderate sedative effects. Guaifenesin increases the volume and reduce the viscosity of tenacious sputum and is used as an expectorant for productive cough.
