Indications

Poliovirus vaccine inactivated is used for: Active immunisation against poliomyelitis

Adult Dose

Parenteral Active immunisation against poliomyelitis Adult: As inactivated trivalent vaccine of polio virus types 1,2,3: Primary immunisation: 3 doses of 0.5 mL, given via IM or SC inj at least 8 weeks apart. Booster dose of 0.5 mL is given every 10 years for patient with increased risk of exposure.

Child Dose

Parenteral Active immunisation against poliomyelitis Child: As inactivated trivalent vaccine of polio virus types 1,2,3: ?6 weeks Same as adult dose. Booster dose of 0.5 mL is given at 4 years of age.

Contra Indications

History of hypersensitivity to any component of the vaccine. Acute febrile illness.

Precautions

Patient with immunodeficiency, bleeding disorder/thrombocytopaenia. Postpone vaccination in patients with acute febrile illness. Children. Pregnancy and lactation. Patient Counselling This drug may cause syncope, if affected, do not drive or operate machinery. Monitoring Parameters Monitor for hypersensitivity reactions 15 minutes after administration.

Pregnancy-Lactation

Interactions

Increased risk of bleeding with anticoagulants. Decreased immune response with immunosuppressive therapies (e.g. high dose corticosteroids) and immunoglobulin.

Adverse Effects

Side effects of Poliovirus vaccine inactivated : Significant: Inj site reactions (e.g. pain, redness, bruising, swelling, induration), syncope, bleeding, asthenia, fever, hypersensitivity reaction (e.g. anaphylaxis). In children, crying. Blood and lymphatic system disorders: Lymphadenopathy. Gastrointestinal disorders: Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting. General disorders and administration site conditions: Irritability. Metabolism and nutrition disorders: Loss of appetite. Musculoskeletal and connective tissue disorders: Myalgia. Nervous system disorders: Headache, restlessness. Skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders: Rash.

Mechanism of Action

Poliovirus vaccine inactivated (IPV) contains poliovirus type 1 (Mahoney strain), type 2 (MEF-1 strain), and type 3 (Saukett strain). It promotes active immunity by inducing production of antibodies against polio virus infection. Synonyms: Salk vaccine.
