Silymarin

Indications

Silymarin is used for: Chronic inflammatory diseases of the liver & hepatic cirrhosis.

Adult Dose

Oral Hepatic diseases Adult: Initially and In Serious Cases: 70-mg capsule: 2 caps 3 times daily. 140-mg capsule: 1 cap 3 times daily.

Child Dose

Renal Dose

Administration

Should be taken with food. Take after meals.

Contra Indications

Hypersensitivity, pregnancy, lactation.

Precautions

Children.

Interactions

Reduced lipid peroxidation w/ butyrophenones or phenothiazine. Antagonistic effect w/ yohimbine & phentolamine.

Adverse Effects

Side effects of Silymarin : Occasional laxative effects. Abdominal bloating, diarrhoea, flatulence, loss of appetite, anorexia, nausea, stomach upset.

Mechanism of Action

Silymarin is an active principle from the fruit of Silybum marianum, which contains a mixture of flavonolignans. It reduces the turnover of membrane phospholipids and stabilises the cell membranes of hepatocytes. It has potent antioxidant action and prevents lipid peroxidation.
