Benzalkonium chloride has been widely used as a broad spectrum anti microbial agent for disinfection, antisepsis and preservation of pharmaceutical products.
Benzalkonium chloride exerts its antimicrobial effect through non specific interaction at the bacterial cytoplasmic membrane. Such action increases membrane permeability towards cytoplasmic materials such as amino acids and nucleotides and results eventually in the lysis of the cells.
